Cake decorating has become a popular hobby for many people today. In fact, it’s probably one of those things that most people find themselves interested in doing.
Cake decorating really is one of those arts which uses decorating tools, or icing or decorating frosting to create beautiful plain cakes quite aesthetically more interesting to look at. Alternatively, cakes can also be sculpted and molded into 3-D objects, characters and places. They are often embellished with ribbons, beads, and other decorative items.
Cake decorators often take a cake baking class to learn how to do this. Some people like to decorate their own cakes. It’s usually quite easy to do, although it does require a lot of skill. There are a few things you will need for cake decorating. Most of these are readily available at any local grocery store or department store.
You will also need an assortment of pastry and cookie sheets. These will be used to hold all your cookies, crumbs and fruit pieces down. The basic technique is to use your decorating tools to draw out your design on the paper first. Then use it as a template to cut the other side of the paper to size. Then repeat this process with the other side of the sheet. You will also want some colored pencils so you can color code your design.
You may also want to use these items to hang your decorative items from the cake decorating table. I like to have a set which includes wire hangers which I then hang my decorative items from.
There are also books about decorating cakes that can be a great help. Most of these will provide step-by-step instructions on how to properly decorate a cake. The books are usually fairly simple to read and easy to follow. The one thing I found interesting was the ones that teach you how to make your own decorations.
I have even been known to create cakes from chocolate fondue. You will be amazed at what you can accomplish with a simple fondue pan and a few chocolate chips. There is no reason why you can’t come up with your very own cake decorating ideas if you use your imagination.
Cake decorating isn’t something that requires much skill or a lot of time. With a little work, you too can become a professional at making cakes. There are so many possibilities for what you can do with this skill, it’s easy to get lost and end up making more cakes than you actually started with.
Don’t let this discourage you though, because there are also a lot of recipes that call for just a few basic ingredients such as flour, sugar, water and baking soda. You can purchase this mixture in any store that sells baking supplies.
Cake decorating doesn’t take up a lot of your time, and you don’t need a lot of money either. It does however, require patience, so keep that in mind.
It’s important to remember that while decorating your cake, you should use proper technique. If you are unable to create a good finish or you make a mistake in your decorating, your cake will look shabby or tacky.
One very important but often ignored yet important cake decorating tip is to have a plan before you start decorating. This way you won’t get lost along the way and end up making many mistakes. A great plan will save you from having to start over or doing unnecessary work.
Also remember to use the right tools. While there are plenty of inexpensive tools on the market today, some are better than others and some are more expensive.
